Is it just aging or is it my medication?
October is National Pharmacy Month!
Medication Safety is the top priority of all pharmacists and we LOVE partnering with our patients/clients on medication safety and positive outcomes!
Last week we mentioned the dangers of taking many medications to treat a single condition, but did you know that your medications may need to change as you age, regardless of how many prescriptions you have?
Lots of things change as you age, your medication is no different!
Not only does it take more effort to participate in your favorite outdoor activities, but older adults also see changes in the senses, brain structure, and, importantly, metabolism!
Medications depend on the body's metabolism to get where we want them to go, and to do what we want them to do! Changes in your metabolism as you age can substantially increase or decrease the effectiveness of medications!
Is it just age or my medication?
Our bodies are incredibly complex, and as a result, we can see changes even if we've been taking a drug for a long time!
"But I've taken that for years", said Penny
Penny couldn't figure out why she was now so tired all the time and she was unable to control her body temperature too. She wasn't sick and she was past hot flashes, so she finally decided to talk to her doctor. After some tests, Penny found out her thyroid numbers had changed. Her doctor explained that her body was now metabolizing her current medication differently. With a slight change in her lifelong medication, Penny was back to feeling like herself!
Has it been a while since you've talked about your current medications?
