Tips for a Safe Pregnancy
Let's turn grief into good
Earlier this year, we were deeply saddened to learn that Olympic champion, Torie Bowie died from pregnancy complications. She was just 32 years old with a full, loving, life ahead. How is it possible that someone in peak condition did not survive pregnancy?
Actually, Ms. Bowie's shocking death illuminates a shocking trend:
The US is last among developed nations for safe births
The mortality rate among pregnant women is rising
Women of color have 4x-risk than white women.
80% of pregnancy deaths are preventable. Let's turn Ms. Bowie's tragic death into something better for other moms-to-be. Use or share these tips.
Begin by knowing the risks and preparing to head them off.
If possible, before any pregnancy, consult with a doctor to discuss your health and any potential special risks you may have during a pregnancy. How can you prepare?
Gather your team! Actively enlist a Care Partner (or two!) to be with you every step of the way. This partner can be the baby's father, your best friend, auntie – even a professional patient advocate. Share these tips – and more – so you will all be "on the same page."
Meet with doctors and choose one that listens to you, is available, has lots of experience.
At the same time, be sure to check out the hospital where the doctor practices. What is the hospital's safety rating?
Consider a midwife.
Do your own research: know the signs of potential complications.
Get help for any signs of problems. Right away! No need to be "brave" or "tough it out"... get medical care fast!
If your child-bearing years are behind you, I hope you will share these tips with anyone you know who is pregnant – or looking forward to the possibility some day!
