So many tests!!!
Are all these tests really necessary? How many times have you thought or asked this question?
We all know certain tests are required for diagnosis and health maintenance, however, there are times when we should question the necessity of tests our providers order.
How do you determine which tests are necessary or not? Ask your doctor for the following details and take good notes:
Why is it ordered
What you will learn from the test
When to expect test results
How often will this test need repeated
Where you will find the test results (i.e. on your portal or elsewhere?)
Soonest availability of your doctor to explain your test results to you. Note: Sometimes you can get a telehealth appointment sooner than an office appointment.
YES, we cover that. NOT
Keep in mind, your insurance likes to play the 'gatekeeper' when it comes to pre-approval and payment for certain tests ordered by your doctor.
VERIFY YOUR TESTS WILL BE COVERED BEFORE THEY ARE DONE.
Be pro-active.
Look for test results on your patient portal or call your doctor's office on the date your results are expected. If necessary, keep following up.
Sometimes, it makes sense to have tests repeated. Believe it or not, there is variability in how tests are administered and evaluated in different labs. If you ever feel that your tests or results don't square up with your "gut feeling", we can be your sounding board – or take your concerns directly to your doctor.
