This Doctor nearly died when his own Doctor wouldn't listen
After a "routine" colonoscopy, Dr. Mieczkowski started losing an alarming amount of blood. As it continued to gush for hours in the ER, he pleaded with his doctor for a blood transfusion – which he ignored. Finally, with half his blood drained, another doctor stepped up to save his life.
Dr. Mieczkowski's story is too important to summarize. There are more details you should know, so I hope you will take a few minutes to read his full account, especially his advice for how to get care if your doctor doesn't take your worries seriously.
Another little-known tip in case this ever happens to you...
If you ever feel like you are "going downhill" under hospital care, call the equivalent of 911. Dial 0 (operator) from a landline in the hospital and say:
"I am calling for a Condition Help."
or
"Please send a rapid response team to [give location, room number]."
Hospitals are required to send a different care team immediately – studies show they save lives!
If you ever feel you aren't being heard in your medical care – and feel uncomfortable speaking up – I am always here as a listening ear and a voice for your best and safest care.
