Realistic Health Goals, NOT Resolutions
t’s New Years! A time for celebration, renewal, and… resolutions! We all know the deal. Set a resolution, stick with it for a few months (or weeks) and then… we’re left with a gym membership we never use. But what if we could set realistic goals that set us up for success?
As many as 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail by February, according to some estimates. This happens because of unrealistic expectations and a lack of planning and accountability. Many people set goals that are too vague or extreme, making them hard to sustain. Instead, modest and manageable steps, like focusing on one habit at a time, are much more effective in building lasting change.
Consider these common New Year’s Resolutions:
“I will lose 20 pounds in two months”
Instead, try “replacing sugary drinks with water during lunch”“I will go to the gym every day”
Instead, “do something active for 20 minutes, three times a week”“I will completely cut out sugar”
Instead, “enjoy desserts only on the weekend”“I will stop using my phone as much”
Instead, try having “no phones at the dinner table”
Here are some other small but mighty goals that you might not think of!
Schedule your checkups (dentist and doctor). Our lives can be busy, and often well-checks will fall by the wayside. Now is a great time to schedule those visits while you’re feeling motivated!
Spend time with nature. Nature has enormous benefits that we often miss in our digital world! This could include spending time at the park, but it could also include getting some plants at your desk or office, or maybe eating lunch outside during the week! Whatever works for you.
It’s also important to create accountability! Don’t plan alone, find a buddy to do your health goal with and keep each other accountable. This alone can increase your chance of completing something by 2x!
Measurable steps and flexibility are key. Focus on realistic goals that fit into your daily routine. And plan ahead, making sure your goals are attainable even on your busiest weeks. Remember, small milestones lead to big goals!
